About this Event

Stopping the net emission of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases is not enough to stop global warming. There is already enough CO2 in the atmosphere to continue warming even if we stop adding to it. We must also remove significant amounts of atmospheric CO2 and sequester it in long-term storage such as rocks, caverns, and the deep oceans.

Our series explores innovative solutions.

This FREE series kicks off with an engaging scientific challenge: How do we know climate change is caused by us? It sets the stage for the presentations that follow, establishing why Net-Zero is not enough and why innovative solutions for carbon sequestration are a must. Subsequent presentations will explore innovative approaches to carbon sequestration, including kelp farming, concrete manufacturing, anaerobic fermentation, seeding marine clouds with seawater, the business environment that supports new enterprises focused on climate mitigation, and much more.

February 8th Presentation:Climate Change: How Do We Know It Is Us?

The first presentation in the series begins two hundred years ago, with the French scientist Jacques Fourier puzzled by the question of why the earth is so warm. The talk summarizes, in lay terms, the solution to this mystery and the evidence accumulated, since Fourier, which leads to the conclusion that human activities, mainly the burning of fossil fuels, have resulted in the global warming that now threatens our existence on the planet.

There is no doubt that global warming is here now, and its effects are being experienced worldwide in many weather disasters. This presentation addresses and debunks the misinformation campaigns promoted by the fossil-fuel industry to deny this reality and explains why net-zero carbon dioxide emission is not enough. To successfully fight climate change, we must remove and sequester significant amounts of atmospheric CO2.

About our speaker:

J. Campbell Scott, PhD. was born in Edinburgh and grew up in Scotland. He was educated at St. Andrews University and the University of Pennsylvania. He retired after 5 years teaching physics at Cornell University and nearly 40 years with IBM Research. He joined the Climate Reality Project and received their training in July, 2020. During his scientific career Campbell researched materials for use in various information and energy technologies, including solar cells and batteries. His career involved lecturing to students, from introductory level to graduate, and presentations to professional audiences at scientific conferences. In his current role as director of the speakers' bureau in the Silicon Valley Chapter of CRP, he applies his experience in scientific research to inform the public about the science, impacts and solutions of climate change.
