"Come for the Content, Stay for the Community"
Abstract:
The Interactive Online Network of Inorganic Chemists is a vibrant community of chemistry professors and educators. Better known by its element-symbol-case acronym, IONiC has tremendously impacted teaching and learning in inorganic chemistry. IONiC was founded to spark conversations and make teaching visible. Community members interact through workshops and webinars, learn from each other, and share teaching materials through the Virtual Inorganic Pedagogical Electronic Resource website (VIPEr, ionicviper.org). The community has grown through these interactions and by doing research on teaching and learning in inorganic chemistry. The community casts a wide and diverse net and warmly “encoils” chemistry educators from around the world. IONiC’s impact on inorganic chemistry is being replicated in the fields of green chemistry, organic chemistry, nanomaterials, computational chemistry, and more. Building bridges between these communities will catalyze change across chemistry education.
