Nellie McKay presents GEE WHIZ: The Get Away From Me Demos
More than two decades after the album that introduced Nellie McKay to the world, she returns to where it all began.
GEE WHIZ: The Get Away From Me Demos finds the endlessly inventive singer, songwriter and musician revisiting her acclaimed 2004 debut, Get Away From Me—playing the album in its entirety.
When Get Away From Me arrived, it immediately made people pay attention. Rolling Stone awarded it four stars, the album landed on the Billboard Top 200, and McKay made her national television debut on The Late Show with David Letterman. More than twenty years later, Salon called it “one of the great pop albums of the early 21st century.”
That remarkable debut was only the beginning.
Nellie has gone on to release an eclectic collection of critically acclaimed albums, moving effortlessly from jazz and pop to cabaret, soul and sounds that simply refuse to be categorized.
Her career has taken her far beyond the recording studio. She won a Broadway Theatre World Award for her performance as Polly Peachum in The Threepenny Opera, has appeared on and off Broadway, and created acclaimed musical biographies of figures including environmentalist Rachel Carson, comedian Joan Rivers, jazz musician Billy Tipton and Barbara Graham.
Her film and television work is equally wide-ranging, with acting and musical credits in film and songs heard in series including Mad Men, Weeds, Boardwalk Empire, Grey’s Anatomy, NCIS and Nurse Jackie. Television appearances have included Letterman, Conan O’Brien, Craig Ferguson and The View.
Singer. Pianist. Songwriter. Actor. Humorist. Musical chameleon.
Nellie McKay has built a career by following her own wonderfully unpredictable path—and now she brings us back to the album where that journey began.
Nellie McKay. Get Away From Me. The entire album. At The Blue Door.
