On November 24, 2024, the canton of Basel-Stadt will be voting on the so-called Music Diversity Initiative. The initiative demands that at least 30% of the previous music budget be allocated to 'free music creation.' While the initiative may sound sympathetic at first glance, it poses a threat to the cultural landscape of Basel and the professional existence of many musicians and artistic institutions. The initiative is populist and divisive, pitting different groups against each other and promoting unfair and unjust solutions. It destabilizes the carefully balanced and democratically legitimized funding structures of culture and takes a sonderweg (special path) for music. We say NO to this harmful and unnecessary initiative.
