NCPA-HSBC Bandish: A Tribute to Legendary Composers

Indian music centers around a well-structured melodic and rhythmic composition known as bandish. It represents a central idea or base upon which the edifice of a performance is sculpted and realised.
The three-day festival will showcase some of the most treasured works of great composers of pre-independence as well as post-independence era in the history of India. Some eminent artistes will present select compositions spanning wide-ranging genres of Indian music.

Trained under dhrupad maestros Zia Mohiuddin and Zia Fariduddin Dagar, Umakant Gundecha continues to have an illustrious career since the past four decades as a vocalist and Guru of the Dagarvani dhrupad.
In this recital, along with his nephew and disciple, Anant Gundecha, Umakant Gundecha will present some compositions of fabled composers like Swami Haridas and his eminent disciples, Tansen and Baiju.
Sanjeev Abhyankar had the privilege of training with the inimitable maestro of Mewati gharana, Jasraj. He continues to follow his mentor’s style with renditions of classical as well as devotional music.
He will present select compositions created by his Guru, Jasraj, ranging genres of khayal, haveli sangeet and Sanskrit pad.

Trained with the inimitable diva of Banaras gharana, Girija Devi, Malini Awasthi is known for her contribution to semi-classical and folk genres. With an impressive career including singing for films, she has a wide repertoire of forms ranging across regions of Banaras to Awadh, sung in dialects like Awadhi, Bhojpuri and such others.
Her presentation will include a bouquet of semi-classical and folk music compositions like thumri, dadra, kajri, chaiti, sawan and jhoola etc., created by some noted poets/composers of the Banaras region: Bharatendu, Ramprasad Mishra (Ramuji), Sajile and Chhabile. These compositions are in a dialect known as Kashika, which is spoken in and around Banaras.

Having arranged over 15,000 songs over the past six decades, Uttam Singh has a multidimensional musical personality that ranges from an accomplished violinist and music arranger, to a well-known music director and music composer, besides being a skilled recordist for many Bollywood films.
Curated by Uttam Singh, the presentation will include musical works of two stalwarts, Naushad Ali (1919-2006) and Madan Mohan (1924-1975), with whom Uttam Singh had the privilege of closely working.
Five singers, well-versed in performing for films, will present a bouquet of unforgettable melodies composed by the two legendary composers. They will be accompanied by a live orchestra of over 40 musicians.
