Listening Session on the Artistry of Shivkumar Sharma

Guided by Dilip Kale and Takahiro Arai

This event makes available to lovers of Indian music some of the priceless recordings of great masters from the archives of the NCPA.

The santoor is a stringed instrument from the folk tradition of Kashmir. The name of legendary instrumentalist Shivkumar Sharma (1938-2022) is inseparably associated with this instrument. His pioneering efforts have given the santoor, made up of over 90 strings, its unique ‘voice’ and idiom and helped it acquire a position on par with other stringed instruments in the contemporary Indian art music.

As senior disciples of the santoor maestro and practising instrumentalists, Dilip Kale and Takahiro Arai have had the privilege of associating with and performing alongside their mentor.

The session will feature selected audio and video excerpts of Sharma’s recordings specially made at the NCPA on various occasions between 1971 and 2019. Kale and Arai will provide relevant commentary to enrich the experience.
