About this Event

Join us for an insightful session where we delve into the evolving landscape of AI compliance and ethical considerations. We'll explore the latest updates, including the results of the first Operation AI Comply sweep, which saw the FTC take action against five companies for deceptive and unfair practices in their use of AI. With the recent election potentially influencing future FTC enforcement, this session will provide valuable insights into what to expect in 2025.

We'll also discuss the different types of data and the challenges of leveraging AI tools while addressing PII and confidentiality issues. This session will serve as an advisor's guide and a non-profit professional's guide to AI, offering practical dos and don'ts and ethical considerations. Whether you are a seasoned professional or new to the field, this session will equip you with the knowledge and tools to navigate the complexities of AI in the coming year.

About the Speakers:

Richard Fry, Taxation Practice Group Leader, Partner, BDB Law

I am a business tax attorney who provides clients with trusted advice concerning significant transactions, tax planning, and difficult challenges encountered in their daily operations. My practice focuses on state and local tax compliance and controversies, including Ohio and multistate sales/use tax, commercial activity tax, and personal income tax issues, and in federal income tax controversies with the Internal Revenue Service. Additionally, because of my tax background, I often advise clients regarding the business and tax implications of commercial and real estate transactions. I take pride in understanding my clients’ business needs and objectives so I can help them achieve their goals in the most beneficial, yet practical, manner.

As the Former Chair of the Ohio State Bar Association Taxation Committee, I have been asked to present my opinion concerning tax laws and policy to Ohio legislatures. These opportunities have given me invaluable insight into the legislative process and the practical considerations that mold tax policy.

Finally, I enjoy giving back and volunteering with several charitable organizations in Northeast Ohio. My involvement with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio and Stewart's Caring Place has been particularly fulfilling.

David J. Myers, Partner, BDB Law

Born near the end of Generation X, I came of age alongside the technology we now take for granted. I exchanged spiral-bound notebooks at St. Xavier High School for computer labs at the University of Cincinnati. As a student at Notre Dame Law School, I dutifully took notes using a folding keyboard connected to my PDA. I had a PC at my desk from day one as a young lawyer. Convinced that technology would disrupt the practice of law, in 2007 I joined SpliceNet, a technology consulting company. For 14 years, I consulted on line-of- business applications, built servers, migrated businesses to “the cloud,” earned coveted certifications from Sophos, LexisNexis, and Microsoft, and eventually focused on keeping computer systems secure in an increasingly-dangerous world.

In August of 2021, I left SpliceNet, where I had ultimately become a shareholder, to begin a new journey with Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs, LLC. Buckingham has served businesses in the Cleveland, Akron and Canton areas for over 100 years. Now, as part of that family, I passionately provide “white glove treatment” for cybersecurity, data privacy and technology law issues to businesses of all sizes across Northeast Ohio.

I live in Lakewood with my wife, my two daughters, and two dogs. I spent years training in mixed martial arts, including Muay Thai kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and Kali. Now my free time is less intense, spent fishing or working with hobby electronics.
