Nature's Ultimate Defences: The Hidden World of Invertebrates

Australia is well known globally as the home to some of nature’s most deadly animals, but beyond the snakes, spiders, jellyfish, sharks and crocodiles, it is also home to creatures with weaponry we know far too little about. Invertebrates, particularly insects, possess a diverse array of armaments that are as brilliant, varied, and surprising as the creatures that wield them. For humanity, this weaponry goes beyond curio; it can drive medical breakthroughs, inspire advanced military technology, and also, act as a grim reminder of the destructive potential of biological warfare.

Your Speaker:

Dr Eliza Middleton is an entomologist and ecologist at the University of Sydney whose research explores the remarkable behaviour and biology of invertebrates. With a PhD from the Australian National University and a passion for making science accessible, she has spent years studying how insects and other invertebrates navigate, communicate and survive.

Alongside her research, Eliza regularly appears in the media and speaks at public events, translating complex science into engaging stories that reveal the extraordinary world of the creatures living all around us.
