About this Event
Enoch Pratt Free Library is thrilled to partner with to offer a Nature Writing Series this spring. Each of these events will provide participants with the opportunity to encounter and interact with nature in a unique way.
On April 26, Pratt invites you to join us for a unique writing workshop that aims to emulate an inspiring jaunt through Cylburn’s beautiful natural spaces all from within Central’s Poe Room. Participants will have the opportunity to engage all their senses and explore how nature inspires the creative process. This immersive experience will provide participants an opportunity to experience nature in an approachable and accessible manner.
Pratt is very excited to welcome poet and essayist Lia Purpura as our workshop facilitator. Lia will bring the natural world indoors and introduce ways to imagine into the wider and deeper and very alive environment we all share and call home. So many urban natural spaces are overlooked and dismissed – but the other-than-human world is speaking to us all the time. This workshop will explore ways of listening, connecting, and writing about our experiences, conversations, and memories.
About the Facilitator:
Lia Purpura is the author of ten collections, including essays, poems, and translations. A finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for On Looking (essays), her awards include Guggenheim, NEA, and Fulbright Fellowships, as well as five Pushcart Prizes, the AWP Award and others. Her work appears in The New Yorker, The New Republic, Orion, The Paris Review, The Georgia Review, Agni, Emergence, and elsewhere. Purpura has served as Writer in Residence at The University of Maryland, Baltimore County and Loyola University; other teaching venues include the low-residency Rainier Writing Workshop, the Breadloaf Writers’ Conference, the University of Iowa’s Nonfiction MFA program, as well as workshops at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility, and the Glenwood Life Recovery Center.
