Natural Ink Workshop: Ancestral Knowledge for a Sustainable Future
in ancestral knowledge.
About this Event
Long before synthetic pigments existed, cultures across the world extracted colour from plants, soils, and everyday organic materials, working in harmony with nature.
In today’s context of environmental awareness, revisiting these techniques offers not only a creative experience but also a reflection on sustainable choices, slow processes, and respectful use of natural resources.
The workshop begins with a safe and accessible demonstration of pigment extraction using the infusion method.
Participants will be introduced to the concept of natural chemistry in art. Using red cabbage pigment, I will demonstrate how the addition of baking soda (an alkaline ingredient) transforms the colour, shifting it from purple to shades of blue and green.
The practical demonstration concludes with the application of the inks. The group will paint an illustration, using inks made from red cabbage, turmeric and coffee.
