About this Event
Sustain DuPage presents this final workshop in our native plant series for this year. This outdoor walk takes place at the instructor's home; a groundbreaking example of sustainable architecture and landscaping in DuPage County. Participants will learn how to identify 39 native trees, shrubs, and plants whose leaves provide beautiful color displays in the autumn, and provide food that can be harvested in Fall and Winter. Attendees will also be able to dig Jerusalem artichokes for food, as well as dig sassafrass roots and enjoy homemade sassafrass tea, wild plums, and native cactus fruit!
Because it is outdoors, please come prepared for the weather. We encourage you to bring a shovel and a container to take home your artichokes and roots, as well as a mug to enjoy your tea : )
About your teacher:
Pat Armstrong has to the understanding and education of our local and edible wild plants. In addition to her workshops with Sustain DuPage, she has taught at the Morton Arboretum, College of DuPage, and The Resiliency Institute.
In 1983, she and her husband designed and built their home, Prairie Sun, to harmonize with the natural ecosystems of northern Illinois. This energy-efficient home utilizes both active and passive solar energy, and is landscaped with over 300 species of native trees, shrubs, prairie grasses and wildflowers, approximately 40% of which are edible!
