Kids to Parks Day is a national day of outdoor play celebrated annually on the third Saturday of May. The day connects kids and families with public lands through park events that promote discovery and exploration in the great outdoors. Head to Hungry Mother State Park for a day full of kid-friendly events.
9 a.m. Kayaking for Kids
Enjoy an exciting morning with an interpreter as we paddle around the lake and learn valuable paddling skills that can make your time in nature much more thrilling. This exclusive Kids to Parks Day program is only for children and their families. Children must be at least 8 years old and accompanied by an adult on the program. Spots are limited and are first come, first serve. Pre-registration is required at the Discovery Center or by calling 276-781-7400 by 5 p.m. on
Friday, May 19. Meet at the Dock ’n Shop $10/person
12 p.m. Salamander Meander
The Appalachian Mountains are home to many unique salamander species. Get ready to get your feet wet as we search for some of these and use what we find to keep an eye on how healthy our water is. Meet at Parking Lot 6. Free
2 p.m. Amazing Animals with Darin Handy
Join our amazing volunteer Darin Handy as he shows us all sorts of amazing critters, live! Darin is a certified wildlife rehabilitator and has developed quite the collection of animals over the years. Come meet some favorites as he uses his furry, scaly, and crawly friends to teach us the value of nature and about the amazing life that we share our planet with. Meet at the Campfire Pit behind Shelter 3. Free
4 p.m. Art in Nature
Art is one of the most exciting ways to use your own creativity to explore nature. Join artist and Virginia Master Naturalist, Renee Wienecke, as she helps you to look for inspiration in nature and encourages your creative side to create a piece of art around Hungry Mother's salamanders. Meet at the Discovery Center. Free
