About this Event

Paraclimber Maureen Beck learned how to rock climb one-handed through trial and error—one of her early adaptive climbing innovations involved taping a metal ladle to her arm. It wasn’t long before she was tackling some of the hardest climbs by a one-handed athlete, securing two world championships in the process. In her constant pursuit of new challenges, she journeyed to Canada’s Cirque of the Unclimbables to attempt the first unassisted adaptive climb of the Lotus Flower Tower. With her trademark humor and wit, this 2019 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year will chronicle her journey as one of the foremost leaders in the sport of paraclimbing.
*We NEED people to be sure to commit to coming. If we have a bunch of no-shows, it will impact our school’s ability to get school matinee tickets in the future. No-shows may have field trip access restricted in the future.

We encourage you to turn in a sample that is linked to the field trip that you attended during your next learning period. It helps to ensure that we can continue to provide these opportunities.

Heartland field trips are designed for families to attend together. Students need to be accompanied by an adult chaperone. If your student will be attending with another family, please indicate this when you register your student and let the field trip host know once you complete your registration.

**To ensure the health and safety of all attendees, please do not attend a field trip if you, your student(s), or anyone in your household is ill or showing possible signs of illness.**

May I pay using my funds? This event is FREE!

Does this trip have any height, weight, and/or age restrictions? The field trip is for students in 5th -12th grade only. Each person who attends a field trip or event must be registered through Eventbrite. Babies, toddlers, younger siblings, and unregistered adults will not be admitted.

Check-in Procedures: Please look for Ruthie Peterson and Laura McCarley (holding a Heartland sign) in front of the PAC (Area closest to the stairs up from the parking garage) They will check you in. Once everyone in our group has arrived, we will be allowed to enter the PAC and be seated as a group. PLEASE DO NOT BE LATE! You will be preventing others from being seated in a timely manner.

Is there on-site parking available? Please consider carpooling: For those arriving in personal vehicles, plan to arrive 45 minutes early to park. Cal Poly campus is in session during performances and parking availability is limited in the Grand Avenue parking structure closest to the PAC. Cal Poly day parking permits are required and can be purchased for $15 from the automated dispensers found in the Grand Ave structure. There is also a park mobile app option. Information about that option will be shared with confirmed attendees.

Can we pack snacks or lunch for this event or field trip? No.

Please do not bring food that contains peanuts to any Heartland event.
