Three Hare Song began with the Literary Map of Exeter and Devon published by the Exeter City of Literature team. It's contents inspired 'Three Hare Song', a long-form epic poem exploring the landscapes and lineage of the Devon literary tradition.Taking the Exeter Book of Anglo-Saxon Poetry as an underlying thread running through his poem, Nathan explores the connections between specific places and writers over thirteen linked cantos. His chosen writers include those with well-known Devon connections and others whose links within the county are not so widely recognised. The piece's title arrives from the Devon and Dartmoor central motif of the 'Three Hares' - a mysterious, cross-cultural symbol often seen as emblematic of rebirth, fertility, lunar cycles, the trinity, or perhaps a mathematical puzzle.
Nathan Steward is a University of Exeter student and an emerging author, poet and editor whose work has gained both regional and national attention. His writing has been recognised in several competitions, including the Creative Futures Award in 2025. Nathan is inspired by the literary traditions of the South West, drawing on voices such as Laurie Lee, Ted Hughes and especially Alice Oswald, whose layered approach in Dart informs his own creative practice.
