About this Event
'Nani' Noam Vazana is one of the few singer-songwriters in the world who writes and composes new songs in Ladino. This language is close to Spanish and was spoken by the Jewish population of Spain in the 15th century. Today there are reportedly fewer than 60,000 speakers. Nani captures the spirit of the ancient, matriarchal culture and propels it into our century with lyrics about migration, gender and women's empowerment.
Songs in the Ladino language
Nani's new album Ke Haber sounds raw and magical, with soft choir-like trombones, flamenco guitars and Arabic percussion. Noam Vazana was born in Israel and moved to the Netherlands 14 years ago, where she settled in Amsterdam. Her music does not sound traditional but reflects the times we live in, and knows how to make an almost vanished culture relevant again.
She combines ancient texts about gender reassignment, infidelity and even homoerotic poetry written by rabbis in the Middle Ages with her own writings about women - against the background of arranged marriages or the belief in magic and fairies.
