Speaker Biography:
Dr. Luis Padilla joined Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium in November of 2022 as its President and CEO. Prior to his arrival in Omaha, he served as the Vice President of Animal Collections at the Saint Louis Zoo, overseeing all the care and wellbeing of the Zoo’s animals, and the animal care teams.
Dr. Padilla is a veterinarian, having earned a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Cornell University, and becoming a board certified specialist in Zoo veterinary medicine by the American College of Zoological Medicine. In addition to serving in many veterinary roles at the Saint Louis Zoo, he also worked as a supervisory veterinarian for the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, the Smithsonian National Zoo, and as a veterinarian at the Oklahoma City Zoo. He currently serves as an accreditation commissioner and inspector for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), which is the group that establishes and upholds the highest standards for modern zoos and aquariums.
Dr. Padilla was born and raised in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, moving away after high school graduation to attend college and pursue the training and education to become a Zoo veterinarian to advocate for wildlife conservation.
As president and CEO of Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium and the Lee Simmons Wildlife Safari Park, he is responsible for all facets of the organization’s management, including animal programs, scientific research, guest services, education, facilities, and oversees a $60 MM budget and over 1,000 staff members. With approximately 1.5 million visitors a year, Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is a premier world-known attraction and conservation organization.
Dr. Padilla is currently overseeing the design of the Zoo’s new animal hospital, and renovation of the animal hospital at the Lee G. Simmons Wildlife Safari Park.
