The IISAAK OLAM Foundation (IOF) and the Society for Conservation Biology North America invite you to learn about the vital role of Indigenous Knowledge and Science in conservation efforts at the upcoming North American Congress on Conservation Biology (NACCB).
This year’s NACCB presents unique opportunities to learn from and engage with Indigenous conservation leaders at the forefront of preserving our natural world and weaving Traditional Knowledge with innovative solutions. IOF will be hosting discussions that offer Ethical Space approaches to cross-cultural collaboration in conservation science. These discussions will also include practical and respectful approaches to allyship with Indigenous communities who are on the frontlines of the climate and ecological crises.
Attend a Plenary Session with Indigenous Conservation Leaders
Wednesday, June 26 [10-11:30am PT, Great Hall]
Join us for an inspiring plenary session featuring Indigenous conservation leaders from the Tla-o-qui-aht, Łutsël K'é Dene, and Secwepemc Nations. This session will delve into the principles and practices of Indigenous-led conservation, highlighting how Indigenous perspectives can enrich and enhance Western science approaches to ecology and environmental stewardship.
Curious to learn more about Indigenous-led conservation and Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas? Have a question for Indigenous conservation leaders?
Fill out this brief survey and we’ll do our best to address your questions during the plenary:
Celebrate Nuu-chah-nulth Culture and History
Wednesday, June 26 [5-7pm PT; Great Hall]
Immerse yourself in an evening celebration of Nuu-chah-nulth culture and history. The year 2024 marks the 40th anniversary of the Tla-o-qui-aht Nation’s Wanachus-Hilth-hoo-is (Meares Island) Tribal Park Declaration of 1984. This landmark event will be honoured through storytelling and traditional song and dance. The event will offer profound insights into the Nuu-chah-nulth Peoples’ enduring connection to their lands, waters, and culture.
Attend the Indigenous-led Conservation Film Festival
Wednesday, June 26 [7-9pm PT; Great Hall]
The IISAAK OLAM Foundation, World Wildlife Fund-Canada and the Society of Conservation Biologists are excited to present a series of short films focused on Indigenous-led conservation. These films showcase the resilience, knowledge, and leadership of Indigenous communities in conserving biodiversity and ecosystem health. Through the powerful medium of film, attendees will witness the tangible impacts of Indigenous conservation efforts across North America.
We believe that these opportunities will not only broaden your perspective but also inspire collaborative efforts towards a more inclusive and effective conservation paradigm. Your participation will be instrumental in bridging the gap between Western scientific methods and Indigenous ecological wisdom.
We look forward to welcoming you to these enriching experiences at the North American Congress on Conservation Biology.
