NAC Dance Masterclass with PARTS+LABOUR

Date: Thursday, April 30th, 2026

Time: 10am-12pm

Location: Ottawa Dance Directive (ODD) - Studio B (Arts Court, 2 Daly Ave)

Tickets: $20+tax (if price is a barrier for you, please email us at [email protected])

About the masterclass:

Led by co-choreographer and co-artistic director David Albert-Toth, this masterclass introduces professional dancers to the physical and compositional practices underpinning Labour. Through a guided warm-up and creative exercises developed with Emily Gualtieri, the class explores groove, endurance, unruliness, and collective attention as choreographic tools. Positioned between mastery and mess, the session invites dancers into a rigorous yet open practice that values togetherness, precision, play, and embodied intelligence.

David Albert-Toth is a dancer, choreographer, composer, and co-artistic director of PARTS+LABOUR. His diverse collaborations have led him to perform across North America and Europe alongside artists such as Frédérick Gravel, Lemieux. Pilon 4D-Art, Human Playground, We All Fall Down (Helen Simard, Roger White), and Destins Croisés. He has also contributed to interdisciplinary works with Cédric Délorme-Bouchard, Moment Factory, Phi Centre, CHA Collective, Julie Favreau, and Caraz, as well as with Alexia Bürger in La Femme Qui Fuit, which opened Théâtre du Nouveau Monde’s 2024-25 season, and in numerous short films.

In 2011, David co-founded PARTS+LABOUR with Emily Gualtieri. Their notable works include In Mixed Company (2013; Prix Vue sur la relève), La chute (2013; Audience Choice Award, dance:made in canada), La vie attend (2017; Dora Award nomination, Outstanding Ensemble), and Efer (2021; Prix RIDEAU). In 2022, David and Emily premiered À bout de bras, co-produced by Agora de la danse, followed by its cinematic adaptation At Arm’s Length (FIFA 2023 International Official Selection).

David’s choreographic work and artistic interests are deeply influenced by his Jewish heritage. Drawing from its philosophical and cultural richness, its focus on otherness and morality, and the socio-political complexities that have shaped his family’s identity over generations, this heritage continues to inform his artistic direction. His work, grounded in highly physical frameworks, is also inspired by his immersion and involvement in Montreal’s urban and rave scenes of the late ’90s and early 2000s.

Alongside his creative work, David remains an active presence in the dance community as a sought-after performer, faculty member, teacher, and mentor.

Pilon 4D-Art, Human Playground, We All Fall Down (Helen Simard, Roger White) et Destins Croisés.
