About the event
Naayi Kaledide (The Dog Went Missing), written and directed by Rajendra Karanth, follows an elderly couple navigating the quiet loneliness of their lives after their only son and daughter-in-law relocate abroad. Left behind in an empty home, the couple finds solace in caring for the family's beloved dog, whose companionship becomes their anchor. This poignant drama explores the fragility of bonds and the ache of absence.
This programme is hosted by Indian Heritage Academy in collaboration with Azim Premji University.
About the artists
Writer and Director: Rajendra Karanth
Rajendra Karanth, a native of Kundapur taluk in Udupi district, is an M. A. graduate and retired after serving in Corporation Bank for 37 years. Being active in theatre, Karanth has acted in 63 plays so far. Some popular plays include Muddannana Promotion Prasanga, Mysore Mallige, Gangavatarana, Sanje HaaDu, Mariam Moorane Maduve, etc. He has directed more than 25 theatre groups and acted in more than 40 films and TV serials including Vamshi, Accident, Rama Shama Bhama. He has also become a household name as a writer through his column 'Sakhat Kharantha' in Udayavani. He has received awards such as the Nataka Akademi Award, Guru Narasimha Award, and Kootashri Award.

Rangabhoomi, Udupi, originally founded as NamDde NaTane to make short films, stepped onto the stage thanks to the encouragement of Rajendra Karanth. Within two years, the organisation staged four plays with more than thirty houseful performances. In 2025, their production Naayi Kaledide (The Dog Went Missing) achieved the distinction of winning seven awards.
