Carl Sagan (1934–1996) was an American astrophysicist, planetary scientist, and bestselling author who brought cosmic wonder to millions through his books and the landmark series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage. He combined scientific rigour with a sense of poetic awe, famously describing Earth as a “pale blue dot” suspended in a sunbeam. A prophet of the atomic and space age, Sagan warned of technological arrogance, nuclear devastation, and ecological collapse. His legacy invites us to see ourselves not as separate from the cosmos but as star-born participants in its unfolding, called to wield knowledge with conscience and care for our fragile, shared home.Deborah Bird is a mother, musician, and priest based in Brisbane. With a background in education and music, and a passion for cosmology and community, Deb enjoys the intersections of faith, science, and justice. An Anglican priest since 2017, she has served in parish ministry in Buderim, Toowoomba, and Maleny, where she collaborated with community partners on refugee advocacy, climate action, and LGBTQIA+ inclusion. She is currently the rector of the Kenmore-Brookfield Parish and curator of Another Place to Party, a website amplifying the diverse voices of comprehensive Anglicanism in Australia (anotherplacetoparty.net).
This event will be held ‘in person’ in the Cathedral, over YouTube and Zoom. Choral Evensong will be ‘in person’ at 6pm in the Cathedral and will also be accessible at 6pm here: www.youtube.com/@StJohnsCathedralBris/streams.
Deb will talk about Carl Sagan in the sermon as part of Evensong.
