About this Event
Mystic Soil: From the Roots of Reggie Andrews - Father, Musician, Educator, Luminary is an exhibition honoring the enduring legacy of a master artist whose prolific career spans decades. Andrews began in his teens as a professional musician, becoming a composer, band leader, producer, A&R and always a teacher. His influence molded the sound of LA from the 1970’s to the present day with innovative sounds from Jazz, Funk, Hip-Hop, Choir and Classical. Part of the 18th Annual African American Composers Series, this exhibition traces the roots of Reggie Andrews’ life and work from the classrooms in South Central Los Angeles to stages, studios, and communities far beyond. Mystic Soil reveals how mentorship, rigor and love can transform lives. Curated in collaboration with his daughters using his personal archives, this exhibition celebrates a man who was not only a gifted pianist and songwriter, but a guiding force, father figure, and luminary whose teachings continue to grow new possibilities.
Reggie Andrews’ influence extends across generations of popular music through both his professional work and mentorship. He taught and mentored acclaimed artist Patrice Rushen, whose groundbreaking career reflects his deep commitment to musical excellence. As a songwriter and producer, Andrews is widely recognized for co-writing the Grammy Award-winning hit “Let It Whip” by Dazz Band, and for his contributions to iconic recordings such as “Forget Me Nots,” “Super Freak,” and “Juicy,” songs that helped define the sound of Funk, R&B, and Hip-Hop and continue to resonate across generations.
