The Mystery Film Clubs screenings at Manchester Central Library specialise in showing a wide and eclectic range of films from all over the world. These are the sorts of films unlikely to be seen anywhere else, underseen and under-loved masterpieces from every single point of the globe. There’s no delineation by genre, place or year, all that matters is the quality of the film. Summer has finally started so we’ll keep it nice and sunny. All of these films are hot, but all of these films are hot in very different ways.
This month’s choices are:
Return of the Prodigal Son (Egypt,1976)
A sweeping novelistic family drama dealing with the most corrosive elements of Egyptian society. After years in Pr*son, a political activist is welcomed back home with open arms but his dream soon turns into a nightmare as he fails to live up to his family’s expectations of him.
Maciste in Hell (Italy, 1925)
One of the earliest examples of a franchise film of all time and an epic of imagination and total catastrophe. The straightforward plot follows purehearted strongman Maciste as he is dragged to Hell as the Devil tries to corrupt his morality. This presentation shall be far from silent as we play French metal outfit Gojira’s accompanying musical score.
The Elusive Revengers (USSR, 1966)
A classic Soviet ostern – or red western – in which a band of youths join together to avenge the death of a patriarch. Along the way the boys are caught up in conflict and turmoil and most importantly adventure.
The Wages of Fear (France/Italy, 1953)
A film absolutely sizzling with tension. As perfect as a study on high tension drama can be, and one of the tightest films ever made. The premise is simple, four men get the opportunity to leave their run down town in exchange for completing a nigh-on impossible suicide mission, transporting tonnes of incredibly reactive nitro-glycerine into the jungle through an uneven oil field. Friendships are formed and tested, terror lurks after the smallest mistake and there is lots and lots of sweat.
