This practical, interactive two-day workshop for rehabilitation teams will address evaluation and treatment techniques appropriate for soft tissue limitations that contribute to compensated functional mobility and caregiver dependence. This lecture reviews muscular and fascial anatomy tying kinesiology into a discussion that relates specific soft tissue mobilization and joint mobilization techniques appropriate to improving reach and phases of gait. A thorough discussion will relate the impact of immobility and spasticity on mechanical and neurological aspects of the functional muscle recruitment. Myofascial pain patterns are presented and addressed in a treatment approach to limit their influence on functional activity. This course is designed to focus treatment strategy through laboratory application to improve manual skills appropriate for the rehabilitation setting and suggest recruitment and facilitation techniques to improve motor control in the neurologically impaired patient. An informative and focused laboratory component provides PT’s, OT’s and their assistants with basic practical skills in palpation, seating and positioning, soft tissue assessment and mobilization as it pertains both to functional reach of the upper extremity and the gait sequence in clinical practice. The majority of this course will be hands-on application with frequent case study discussion to identify impairments and exemplify the use of manual therapy through myofascial release and other manual techniques.
