MY WONDERFUL LIFE – Book Launch by Dr Furio Virant OAM
About this Event

The Italian Cultural Institute is pleased to host Dr. Furio Virant OAM for the launch of his book “My Wonderful Life”. The presentation will be moderated by Dr. John Gullotta AM, Deputy Chair of the Order of Australia Association NSW and past president of the Australian Medical Association NSW.

At the end of the presentation, the audience will have the opportunity to interact directly with the author during a brief Q&A session.

The presentation will be in English.

The autobiographical book tells the story of Furio Virant from his early migration from Trieste, Italy, to Australia, in 1955, up to recent times, when he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for services to Medicine through a range of roles.

After graduating as a medical doctor in 1973, Dr. Virant embarked on a journey that took him from Residency to four years in the Royal Australian Navy, where he served on the HMAS Vampire. Starting in 1978, he developed his passion for General Practice in Fairfield, where he was widely involved with the multicultural local community.

The doctor’s story, scattered with humour and varied experience, is an invitation to think of our own stories and find in them the power of resilience.

Born in Trieste, Italy, Furio Virant graduated in Medicine in 1973, then spent four years in the Royal Australian Navy. Upon leaving the Navy, he joined a group practice in Fairfield, NSW, where he grew and developed his passion for General Practice. Throughout the years, he’s been part of Boards and Committees across several medical institutions and was Chair of the Finance and Audit Committee, Treasurer and Director on the first Board of the Australian Division of General Practice. Besides being involved in the interviewing process for the selection of medical students at the University of Sydney and the Western Sydney University, he is a Life Member of the Royal Australian College of General Practice and of the Australian Medical Association. He’s been on the Board of the Medical Benevolent Association (NSW) since 1994 and was vice-President for many years, helping doctors and their families in times of crisis.

On Australia Day 2022, he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for services to Medicine through a range of roles.
