My Medea: A Performance
May 2, 3, & 4 at 7:30 PM
Medea is a first-year Spanish teacher attempting to create the perfect classroom while coping with the death of her brother, separation from her fiancé, a mouse infestation in her classroom, and an unexpected pregnancy. Medea distracts herself by investing her time and money into designing a learning space that encourages all students to take control of their learning needs. It isn’t until she meets Janell Bailey, a student with selective mutism, that Medea reevaluates what it means to feel safe to participate. She confides in Rae, the school nurse, about her suspicions about Janell, and comes to realize that some choices are more complicated than they originally seem.
My Medea is a genre-blending retelling of a classic Greek myth. Through movement and text, this adaptive script immerses true stories written by Rochester-based women about the choice to terminate pregnancy. The play aims to better understand the complex issue of abortion inside one’s own community, start a conversation, create awareness, and spark advocacy.
This project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of The Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts.
