Singer Amy Grant said of Alzheimer's, "It is the last lesson my parents ever taught me." Like Amy, I had a good teacher. My mother was sick for more than a decade. As we walked through the years and adapted to each stage of the disease, Alzheimer's equipped me to find loving and practical solutions for my mother's ever-changing abilities, and left me with a library of lessons I could use to help others navigate the journey.
Alzheimer's is a disease that creates chaos, but it is not a chaotic disease. It marches through a life in a pattern, so that we who are called to assist can plan, adapt and respond with intent. During our time together, I will share my story, its victories, failures and the evolving demands that honed my skills and required the best of my creativity.
While we will discuss health and legal issues, this is not a clinical gathering. Instead, you will learn:
• Practical Strategies to support your loved-one through each stage of the disease,
• Everyday Solutions that provide safety and assurance, and
• Resources to help you as you walk with them on this very, very long journey.
If you are touched by this difficult disease, join me as I introduce you to my creative, beautiful and demanding mother, and share with you the lessons we learned when Alzheimer's visited our lives.
