(Patrick Tam, 1989, Hong Kong, 91 minutes)
Directed by Wong Kar Wai’s mentor Patrick Tam the year after Wong made his directorial debut with As Tears Go By, 1989’s My Heart is That Eternal Rose will have a familiar vibe to those who are fans of the films Wong would make just after. Shot in part by Christopher Doyle (whose next film as DP, Days of Being Wild, was his first with Wong), My Heart follows lovers Rick (the pop-star-turned-actor Kenny Bee, with whom Hou Hsiao-hsien made his earliest movies) and Lap (Joey Wong of A Chinese Ghost Story and Green Snake) who are separated when a job Lap’s father tries to pull off with a triad goes wrong. Six years after their necessary split, Rick encounters Lap once more, who has taken a problematic new lover. Featuring a young Tony Leung Chiu-wai in the supporting cast (who, like Doyle, would first team with Wong the following year) and with music from Danny Chung (Happy Together), My Heart is That Eternal Rose feels like a missing piece in the puzzle for Wong enthusiasts.
In Cantonese with English subtitles.
