"Passionate, detailed music-making is a hallmark of Marlboro performances." The New York Times
Each Marlboro Music touring program is formed around summer performances that co-artistic directors Mitsuko Uchida and Jonathan Biss feel achieved a particular dynamism.
The first of our three tour programs this season features nine outstanding musicians performing works from three centuries. Respighi’s rarely performed "Il Tramonto" for voice and string quartet is a hauntingly affective work that tells the story of two lovers and their tragic fate. Rene Orth’s "You Shattered My Deafness" incorporates text by St. Augustine in a dramatically reflective work. The evening ends with one of the most beloved chamber music works: Felix Mendelssohn’s effervescent String Octet, a piece brimming with bustling energy and beautiful melodies.
Respighi: Il Tramonto
Brahms: Quartet in B-flat major, Op. 67
Orth: You Shattered My Deafness
Mendelssohn: Octet in E-flat Major, Op. 20
Lauren Pearl, soprano
