"Passionate, detailed music-making is a hallmark of Marlboro performances." The New York Times
Each Marlboro Music touring program is formed around summer performances that co-artistic directors Mitsuko Uchida and Jonathan Biss feel achieved a particular dynamism.
Schubert‘s beloved Ave Maria will be heard alongside its more rarely performed companion songs from his German setting of Sir Walter Scott’s Lady of the Lake. Literary allusions continue with Janáček‘s bristling String Quartet No. 1, Kreutzer Sonata, taking after the Tolstoy novella of the same name. The performance concludes with Schumann‘s String Quartet in A Minor, Op. 41, No. 1, composed in the spring of his incredible “chamber music year.”
Program:
Janáček: String Quartet No. 1, Kreutzer Sonata
Shirazi: Soliloquy of the Unnamed
Schubert: Ellens Gesänge, D. 837-839
Schumann: String Quartet, A Minor, Op. 41, No. 1
Lucy Fitz Gibbon, soprano
Geneva Lewis, violin
David McCarroll, violin
Zhanbo Zheng, viola
Marcy Rosen, cello
Kuok-Wai Lio, piano
