Mulher na Roda 2026 – Opening Class with Minha Velha
We open Mulher na Roda 2026 with a unique cultural and musical experience rooted in Afro-Brazilian traditions.
This opening class is an invitation to explore voice, rhythm, and collective music-making, inspired by the musical heritage of Brazil. Led by Minha Velha, the workshop draws from Afro-Brazilian musical languages — including rhythms, songs, and vocal structures also present in Candomblé, approached here purely as cultural and musical knowledge, not as a religious practice.
You don’t need to be a capoeirista, singer, or musician to participate.
Curiosity and openness is enough.
Together, we will explore:
How rhythm and voice connect body and movement
Afro-Brazilian call-and-response singing
Collective singing as a social and cultural practice
Music as a way of sharing history, energy, and presence
In Afro-Brazilian culture, music is more than sound — it is a way to gather people, transmit memory, and create connection across generations and cultures.
This workshop offers a welcoming space to experience that tradition through practice, listening, and participation.

WHO IS MINHA VELHA? (Short Bio)
Minha Velha (Dana Maman) is a respected musician, singer, percussionist, and capoeira educator with nearly three decades of experience in Afro-Brazilian music and capoeira music practice.
She is known for her strong voice, rhythmic sensitivity, and deep engagement with collective singing and percussion, bridging tradition and creative expression. Over many years of teaching and performing, she has inspired students of all ages and backgrounds to connect with sound, rhythm, and community.
In her work, Minha Velha honors the rich musical traditions that shape capoeira’s sound world — from call-and-response singing to layered rhythms — bringing music to life as a shared cultural experience. She has released recordings and led music programs that reflect her commitment to teaching, collaboration, and rhythmic exploration.
At Mulher na Roda 2026, she brings this practical and welcoming musical perspective to participants of all levels, offering a space to learn, sing, and explore Afro-Brazilian music with respect, curiosity, and joy.
