About this Event

Do you love making up songs in the shower or in the car? Ever find yourself singing along to karaoke, wishing you could create your own lyrics on the spot? Have you always wanted to try songwriting, musical improv, or musical theater, but weren’t sure where to start? Been curious about improvised songs, but unsure where to begin?

Join us for musical improv! It's all about creating songs together as a group. It’s improv with music! Hosted every second Saturday of the month, this two hour event is sure to press all your musical and improv buttons. All experience levels are welcome. Really!

You don’t need any experience with improv, singing, or theater. We’ll guide you with playful group warmups, clear examples, and step-by-step games that make it easy to try anything that we do.

This monthly open event can feature a whole array of musical improv activities that can change month to month. Sometimes it may revolve around an instructional workshop, other times it may be revolve around playing specific games suggested by the community.

No matter what any singular event features, the content will always be welcoming and fun. This is a low-stress time to create some good vibes with other people who like music, improv, and combining the two.

At this workshop, you will:
  • Discover Musical Improv: Learn the basics of musical improv and explore common ways that it plays out. We'll guide you through creating songs on the spot in a way that doesn't seem so scary.
  • Get Hands-On Practice: We’ll focus on practical techniques and strategies to make musical improv fun and accessible. Whether you're new to improv or a seasoned performer, you’ll get hands-on experience and learn how to use these methods effectively.
  • Learn Content for All Skill Levels: This event is designed for everyone. From beginners to advanced players, everyone will find tailored content and challenges that make musical improv enjoyable.
  • Enhance Your Stage Presence: Get experience being comfortable in front of a group. Learn how to sparkle with authentic trust in yourself and truly own the moment.

What is Musical Improv?

Musical improv is like a game where you and your friends make up songs right on the spot. You don’t need any prepared lyrics or music; instead, you create them as you go. It’s a mix of acting and singing, where everyone collaborates to create fun and surprising songs that fit the moment.

It might sound tricky, but with the right mindset, simple guidelines, and a bit of practice, it’s easier than it looks. Think of it like creating a first draft—using patterns like adding a chorus and taking turns helps you shape your spontaneous songs.

This event is free, and any donations will go towards Baltimore Musical Improv (a fiscally sponsored non-profit organization)!

Who Should Attend?

This workshop welcomes all writers, improvisers, songwriters, and musical theater enthusiasts—whether you’re into musical theater, pop, rock, folk, or any other genre. Just bring your enthusiasm and willingness to experiment with new song making games.
