The Star Center Youth Theatre is casting teens for the travel company production of ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, adapted from the Tony winning musical.
The youth have been selected to perform this musical on the Main stage at the Atlanta Black Theatre Festival during Labor Day Weekend 2024.
Age Range 13-18
Please bring sheet music of a musical theater, pop or gospel song. A pianist will be provided. You may be asked to cold read from the script.
Wear suitable shoes for a possible dance audition.
ABOUT THE SHOW
The story features colorism, race and class as major plot points, and casting will reflect that in some characters, relative to the entire cast.
ALL roles listed are OPEN. Seeking performers, singers, actors, & dancers. We are seeking actors/singers of multi-racial background with an emphasis on Indigenous/African descent to cast in specific roles.
THE PROCESS:
This creative team will take an ensemble musical/story theatre approach to the play with all performers playing storytellers stepping into the characters. The production explores Afro-Caribbean inspired beliefs and rituals.
ROLES AVAILABLE
Mama Euralie:
**Symbolic mother of us all. She is loving, practical, funny and earthy. Very nurturing.
Tonton Julian:
**He is Ti Moune’s Adopted father. He is faced with the difficult task of letting TiMoune chase her dreams. He is strong, practical and supportive.
Ti Moune:
Gender- Female
**The heroine; tires to break social barriers to be with her love, Daniel. Full of restless energy and optimism.
Daniel Beauxhomme:
Gender- Male
**An aristocratic young man who struggles with crossing social barriers; sensitive and poetic. Struggles with the privilege and burdens that his lighter skin and wealth afford him.
Gatekeeper:
Gender- Male or Female
**Must have a booming voice and commanding stage presence.
Daniel’s Father:
Gender- Male
**Reminds Daniel of the harsh realities of life.He also plays Armand, the ancestor.
Andrea:
Gender- Female
**She is sophisticated, educated and the exact opposite of Ti Moune. She is very graceful.She is Daniel’s beautiful fiancee.
Pape Ge:
Gender- Male or Female
**The sly demon of death. He is feared by the islanders because of what he represents, the unknown. He or she should have a strong and unique voice!
Asaka:
Gender- Female
**Mother of the Earth. Larger than life character. She is generous and good humored on the surface, but like all the gods feared by the islanders.
Agwe:
Gender- Male or Female
**god of water; mentor to Ti Moune; larger than life, mysterious; perhaps the peasants’ greatest fear next to Papa Ge himself; commanding voice and presence
Erzulie:
Gender- Female
**Determined to prove to Papa Ge that love is the greatest power. She is Triumphant, approachable, and level headed. She is the
most celebrated out of the gods, other than Asaka.
ENSEMBLE:
Various ages / ethnicities, PRIMARILY Indigenous/African descent. Storytellers can be played by both boys and girls. They sing the bulk of the show and play various roles, including:
Gossipers, Peasants, Grand Homes, and Villagers. These people have stories of their own to tell. They dance in multiple numbers and provide movement for the piece.
