This concert is sponsored by Vassar College, and is part of the Faculty Concert Series. Tickets are Free.
About the concert: Ernö Dohnányi and Gabriel Fauré were composers who lived during times of immense change in the world and in the arts. Both were considered traditionalists, conservative creators amongst more Avant Garde composers. The program opens with Dohnányi’s Serenade for String Trio from 1902, inspired by Beethoven’s Serenade but infused with the language of Brahms, Schubert, and Hungarian folk melodies from Dohnányi’s homeland. The program concludes with Fauré’s tumultuous and dramatic 2nd Piano Quartet, finished in 1887, is was acclaimed by critics as an announcement of the composers full artistic maturity, and Aaron Copland described the Adagio as "a long sigh of infinite tenderness".
