BACH UND BALAFON
Die lautten compagney BERLIN fragt mit ihrem Kamerun-Projekt nach den Möglichkeiten einer Musik jenseits des kolonialen Kanons. Dabei stehen zwei musikalische Traditionslinien im Mittelpunkt: Die reiche Musiktradition des Balafon, ein Idiophon, das im westafrikanischen Raum bereits seit dem 13. Jahrhundert gespielt wird, trifft auf Musik von Johann Sebastian Bach, gespielt auf historischen Instrumenten des 17. Jahrhunderts. Das Balafon gilt als Erfindung der Sosso, dessen König Soumaoro Kantè ein Balafon mit magischen Kräften besessen habe soll. Das Ethnologische Museum bewahrt in seiner Sammlung mehrere Exemplare.
Zu den Musiker*innen, die das reiche Erbe des Balafon lebendig halten und für die Gegenwart neu interpretieren, gehört der in Kamerun geborene Percussionist und Komponist Ba Banga Nyeck. Auf der Grundlage des traditionellen Fünfton-Balafons hat er vor zehn Jahren ein neues chromatisches Balafon mit zwölf Tönen entwickelt, um auch Bachs Musik auf dem Instrument spielen zu können.
Wie klingt es, wenn dieser balafone Bach mit dem historischen Barocksound ins Gespräch kommt? Und wie lassen sich die hypnotischen Patterns mit kontrapunktischen Fugen fusionieren? Solche Klang-Experimente sind bei dieser Ausgabe der MUSICAL BELONGINGS im Humboldt-Forum zu erwarten. Auf visueller Ebene wird der kamerunische Künstler Tanka Fonta das Projekt mit einer seiner mythopoetischen Bilderzählungen begleiten.

BACH AND BALAFON
With its Cameroon project, lautten compagney BERLIN explores the possibilities of music beyond the colonial canon. The focus is on two musical traditions: The rich musical tradition of the balafon, an idiophone that has been played in West Africa since the 13th century, meets the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, played on historical instruments from the 17th century. The balafon is considered an invention of the Sosso tribe, whose king Soumaoro Kantè is said to have possessed a balafon with magical powers. The Ethnologisches Museum hosts several balafons in its collection.
Among the musicians who keep the rich heritage of the balafon alive and reinterpret it for the present day is Cameroon-born percussionist and composer Ba Banga Nyeck. Based on the traditional five-tone balafon, he developed a new chromatic balafon with twelve tones ten years ago so that he could also play Bach’s music on the instrument.
How does it sound like when this balafon Bach enters into dialogue with the historical baroque sound? And how can the hypnotic patterns be fused with contrapuntal fugues? Such sound experiments can be expected at this edition of MUSICAL BELONGINGS at the Humboldt Forum. On the visual layer, Cameroonian artist Tanka Fonta will accompany the project with one of his mythopoetic picture narratives.
