[English below] Musical Belongings IVIn der Reihe MUSICAL BELONGINGS begrüßt die lautten compagney Berlin im September 2024 eine Legende des Punta Rock: Pen Cayetano und seine Turtle Shell Band, Botschafter der Garífuna-Kultur aus Belize. Die Ballad Opera „Polly“ von Johann Christoph Pepusch und John Gay entstand 1729 als Fortsetzung von „The Beggar’s Opera“, die 1728 in London als Sensation gefeiert worden war. Auf Grund politischer Wirren wurde sie allerdings erst 1777 uraufgeführt. Eine bunte Londoner Gesellschaft des 18. Jahrhunderts verschlägt es in dieser Oper in die Karibik, auf die sogenannten Westindischen Inseln, deren Name von der Ignoranz der europäischen Kolonisatoren zeugt, die diese karibische Inselgruppe für einen Teil Indiens hielten.

In the MUSICAL BELONGINGS series, lautten compagney Berlin welcomes a legend of Punta Rock in September 2024: Pen Cayetano and his Turtle Shell Band, ambassadors of the Garífuna culture from Belize. The ballad opera “Polly” by Johann Christoph Pepusch and John Gay was written in 1729 as a sequel to “The Beggar’s Opera”, which had been celebrated as a sensation in London in 1728. Due to political turmoil, however, it was not premiered until 1777. In this opera, a colourful 18th century London society is projected to the Caribbean, the so-called West Indies, whose name testifies to the ignorance of the European colonizers, who thought this Caribbean archipelago was part of India.
