Musica Spira: She Wept and Triumphed

Women’s sorrow and triumph unfold through music by Strozzi, Jacquet de La Guerre, and a stunning anonymous setting of the Stabat Mater.
About this Event

Stories of women’s anguish and triumphant victories have long inspired musical composers. In this powerful program, we explore Mary’s sorrow with a lament by Barbara Strozzi and an anonymous eighteenth-century setting of the Stabat Mater from Dresden. These are paired with an exultant violin sonata by Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre alongside the same composer’s epic and operatic portrayal of the story of Judith triumphantly beheading Holofernes to save her people.

Musicians: Grace Srinivasan, soprano; Freya Creech, violin; Amy Domingues, viola da gamba; Paula Maust, harpsichord
