On 17th May, Exeter’s renowned grassroots venue Bomba will showcase the talent of three original South-West acts as part of an afternoon of independent music, organised by hometown band no ordinary fish and sponsored by Involving Music.Sitting on the Exeter Quay, Bomba has become a fixture of the city’s musical landscape over the last 40 years. Known as one of Exeter’s cultural hotspots due to the variety of its events, the venue has kept grassroots music at the heart of everything it does, providing a platform for up-and-coming acts and drawing established names from the independent scene while maintaining the feel of an intimate, local venue.
Exeter’s own Luna Gray will kick things off with a bang. This four-piece take inspiration from 90s alternative rock, reminiscent of Metric and The Pixies, to create hard-hitting, melodic rock songs with a groove to get crowds moving. Their single Steady features their signature dirty riffs and a catchy chorus, and won MIDI TV’s Best Single Award in 2024.
Next up are show organisers and hometown heroes, no ordinary fish. Their music incorporates rock and pop styles from the golden age of classic rock right up to the modern day, creating elaborate songs with a strong focus on melody and harmony. Seasoned performers on the grassroots scene, the band has played all over the South West and released two albums (“…press start” and “adverse camber”) as well as some subsequent singles. They are currently working on their third album, which is due for release in 2026.
“There is so much high-quality indie music in this city, so we want to celebrate original songwriting and performance by creating events like this. Please come along and show your support!”
– Stu and Debbie from no ordinary fish
The final act is Torquay-based band Pylon Poets, who combine synths and heavy guitars to create cinematic melodic rock in a style reminiscent of Muse and Bring Me the Horizon. Their recent album, Demise of the Divine, was released in 2025 and firmly established their distinctive sound. They’ll be performing their stadium-sized songs from across their entire back catalogue to bring the event to a powerful close.
Three original bands, one brilliant afternoon. Be sure to catch these rising acts while you can. The show takes place at Bomba on 17th May, with music from 4pm to 7pm.
Tickets are £8 in advance or £10 on the door and are available here.
