American Spiritual Ensemble returns to Worcester to mark the completion of Everett McCorvey’s Artist-in-Residency with a massive production featuring soloists, instrumentalists, and narrators from the Worcester community.
God’s Trombones is Fred Waring’s musical arrangement of James Weldon Johnson’s 1927 book of poems, God’s Trombones: Seven Negro Sermons in Verse. Spoken word elements of the work will be read by leaders in Worcester’s Black community.
“The old-time Negro preacher of parts was above all an orator, and in good measure an actor. He knew the secret of oratory, that at bottom it is a progression of rhythmic words more than it is anything else…his language was not prose but poetry. It was from memories of such preachers there grew the idea of this book of poems.”
