ABOUT "JAZZ WITHOUT BORDERS"

Jazz Without Borders is a product of the vibrant and multicultural New York jazz scene, where Israeli-born musicians have had a strong presence in recent decades. Co-lead by saxophonist Nir Naaman & drummer Nadav Snir-Zelniker and joined by pianist Eldad Zvulun and bassist Daniel Ori, all band members are active and in-demand musicians on the scene. The group is set to explore the common grounds of jazz traditions, Jewish and Israeli music. With concerts and workshops all over the tristate area, the group brings a dynamic event, both entertaining and educational, to a wide variety of audiences.

NIR NAAMAN (Sax) Praised for his “robust tone” (New Yorker) and “fresh” compositional style (Jazziz Magazine), Nir Naaman is a multifaceted Jazz saxophonist, composer, and educator in New York. His debut album Independence was met with wide critical acclaim, described as “mature” (WBGO Radar), “enduring” and a “rare gem” (Jazziz Magazine). Nir has collaborated with leading artists in the US and abroad, including George Cables, Marcus Printup, Terri-Lyne Carrington, and the late Eddie Marshall. Nir has also appeared in noted festivals in Europe, Japan, and the U.S. Nir holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from the New England Conservatory.

ELDAD ZVULUN (piano) Over the last 2 decades, Eldad Zvulun has become a major part of the New York City Jazz and Latin scene, performing with various bands at the city’s major venues. Growing up in Israel, Eldad was classically trained and discovered Jazz later in life. When Arnie Lawrence opened his Music Center in Jerusalem, Eldad joined the many young musicians who found Arnie’s spiritual approach to music so refreshing and soon became a part of Lawrence’s rhythm section, gigging all over Israel as well as the West Bank. In early 2001, Eldad came to New York with the Arnie Lawrence band to perform at the International Association of Jazz Educators’ conference where the band played the Beacon Theater alongside Pat Metheny.

DANIEL ORI (bass) Daniel Ori is an Israeli-born bassist, composer, producer, and a prominent voice in the New York contemporary jazz and world music scene. He has performed worldwide and collaborated with notable jazz musicians such as Lionel Loueke, Dave Liebman, Tim Hagans, Oz Noy, Mark Turner, and Kenwood Dennard to name a few. Ori is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston as well as a winner of the 2009 ASCAP Jazz Composers Award. Daniel has released two solo albums and is currently leading and co-leading multiple projects. His music has been described as fresh, communicative, lyrical, and rhythmic. A blend of modern jazz with Middle Eastern roots and pan-African influences.

NADAV SNIR-ZELNIKER (drums) Born in Israel in 1974, Nadav started playing drums at the age of 16. Soon he became involved with the local Israeli music scene, playing and recording with different Rock & Jazz artists. Throughout these years Nadav has absorbed elements and flavors of the local Mediterranean-music traditions.

In 1999, after receiving several honorary scholarships, such as the America-Israel Cultural Foundation and the Ulledorff Foundation, Nadav was able to move to the US and got his BFA degree in music performance from the Conservatory of Music at SUNY-Purchase College, studying under drumming legends Adam Nussbaum and John Riley. Soon after his arrival in New York, Nadav became highly involved with the local music scene. His versatility enabled him to perform & record with artists from different genres: Jazz, Rock, Jewish/Middle-Eastern, Modern Dance, etc.

He has performed in major venues such as: Carnegie Hall, Symphony Space, Lincoln Center, Blue Note, Birdland, Iridium, and many more.

His debut CD “Thinking Out Loud” was released in July 2010.

For 8 years Nadav has co-led the Israeli ensemble “Trio Shalva”, a collaboration devoted to exploring Jazz and traditional music of the Mediterranean. In 2011 the group released its first album “Riding Alone” and in 2013, its second album - “Breeza”. In recent years Nadav has been co-leading the educational project “Jazz Without Borders” and has been offering concerts and workshops for various communities.
