Being a third-generation native of the island of Kauai, Jana Kitamura Martinโs musical upbringing blends her Japanese heritage with Hawaiian culture. In this workshop, she will explore the varied styles of Hawaiian musical traditions through a culturally informed lens and offer guidance on how to respectfully include music and activities from cultures outside oneโs own. Participants will experience material suitable for all ages, along with pedagogical connections, ukulele arrangements, dances, and literature. The repertoire will include traditional Hawaiian music, music from other prominent cultures in Hawaiโi, and Hawaiian-style covers of popular songs.
