About this Event
New Standards - Broadening the Jazz Repertoire
Join internationally acclaimed pianist, scholar, and bandleader Dr. Monika Herzig for an intimate H.E.P. (Heritage | Education | Play) Master Class inside the Jazz Institute of Chicago’s historic Fine Arts Building suite overlooking Lake Michigan and Buckingham Fountain.
Get to know the music and composers in the Berklee Publication New Standards: 101 Lead Sheets by Women Composers, explore inclusive teaching strategies, and play some of the music together. Monika Herzig, Professor of Artistic Research at the Jam Music Lab University, will share her experiences leading Jazz Girls Days and her all female group Sheroes as well as some research results. Bring your instruments as we will perform some of the music from the Berklee publication together.
This special Women’s History Month session features members of Monika Herzig’s Sheroes ensemble:
- Jamie Baum (flute)
- Monika Herzig (piano)
- Bethany Robinson (bass)
- Karina Colis (drums)
Sheroes celebrates the artistry and leadership of women in jazz, bringing together some of the world’s most compelling instrumentalists. In this master class, participants will explore:
• Creative approaches to ensemble performance
• Leadership and collaboration in jazz settings
• Repertoire development and artistic research
• Expanding representation in jazz education and performance
Designed primarily for music educators, but open to advanced students, Jazz Institute members, and Jazz Links affiliates, this session offers meaningful professional development in an intimate setting that encourages dialogue, networking, and creative exchange.
Dr. Herzig brings a rare combination of global performance experience and academic depth. A touring artist, award-winning recording leader, and author of Jazz and Gender and Experiencing Chick Corea, she has spent decades shaping jazz education and advocacy internationally.
This HEP session also complements Herzig’s evening performance at Constellation and aligns with the Jazz Institute’s Women’s History Month programming.
