About this Event

What could be more lovely than a late afternoon in the garden? Get outside and enjoy classical guitar music at Connecticut Landmarks’ Phelps-Hatheway House & Garden in Suffield for their new Music in the Hatheway Garden concert series this August. Bring a picnic dinner or a lawn chair and enjoy music in the lovely setting of the historic garden from 4 to 6 pm.

The series will kick-off on Sunday, August 15th with award winning classical guitarist Francesco Barone. Barone has performed throughout the United States as a soloist and chamber musician. He has been presented at guitar festivals and societies in New England including the Connecticut Guitar Society, New England Guitar Society and Hartt School Guitar Festival. He has also performed nationally through the classical music startup Groupmuse. Dr. Barone was a prizewinner in the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society Guitar Competition, was featured on a La Bella Strings sponsored concert and has had performances broadcasted on NPR. He received a D.M.A. and M.M. from The Hartt School, and is the author of Chord Companion, a guitar method that applies pedagogy sequencing to learning chords. For more information on Barone, visit https://www.francescobarone.com. Rain Date: Sunday, September 12th.

Then, on Sunday, August 22nd, join us in welcoming Dave Giardina, along with additional musicians from the CT Classical Guitar Society. Giardina is a versatile guitarist, string instrumentalist and educator. He is an award recipient member of the CT Commission on Culture and Tourism and has performed extensively throughout the Northeast at major festivals, bandshells, First Nights, schools, clubs and casinos as a soloist and with ensembles. His compositions are featured on two releases by the CT Guitar Society of which he is a founding member and been the artistic director since 2013. Giardina received his B.A. from St. Anselm College and studied music at the Longy School in Boston. For more information, visit https://ctguitar.org/dave-giardina. Rain Date: Sunday, August 29th.

The grounds open for seating and tours of the first floor of the Phelps-Hatheway House at 3:30 pm. Full house tours are available by advance reservation between 1 and 3 pm. Please contact (860) 668-0055 or [email protected] to reserve a full tour of the historic interiors.

While on site, check out the Visions of Suffield art exhibition in the Visitor Center as part of the town’s continuing 350th anniversary celebration. The Phelps-Hatheway Visitor Center restrooms will be accessible during the performances.

Admission to each concert is $10 per person, $5 for CTL members (children under 12 are free with an accompanying adult). Registration is recommended. Same-day registration will be allowed only if the event has not reached capacity.

In order to protect the health of our staff, visitors, and community, all visitors are encouraged to wear masks and adhere to social distancing guidelines, to and from the property entrance to their lawn space (and any time outside their group’s designated space). Children should remain with their adult(s) during the event. Masks continue to be required within our historic interiors and visitor center due to the smaller spaces and limited airflow that is common in historic buildings.
