About this Event

// ABOUT KATE CALLAHAN AND FRIENDS //

Kate Callahan & Friends is a years-long collaboration between Kate, and musicians Cynthia Wolcott and Michelle Begley. Their sound is sublime three-part harmony woven through Kate’s original songs and folk-driven covers of Crosby, Stills & Nash, Adele, The Wailin’ Jenny’s and Leonard Cohen. Kate Callahan & Friends have performed together for the last 7 years refining their process of arranging songs. Their most acclaimed arrangement to date is of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” Born from a harmonic idea in guest contributor Atticus Kelly’s head, the group fleshed out a haunting rendition of the popular ballad. WNPR radio personality and writer, Colin McEnroe wrote about the group’s Hartfolk Festival performance “…with Begley and Wolcott flanking [Kate]…there was a giant, multi-pronged Emersonian celestial tuning fork on stage…it put light in one’s heart. And oh! They did a remarkable arrangement of “Hallelujah.” An award-winning presence on the Connecticut music scene, Callahan served two years as Connecticut’s State Troubadour, taking special interest in the state’s inmate population. She created a program called Affirming Voice, a vocal empowerment experience for women inmates at York Correctional Institution. Kate Callahan & Friends are looking for a new band name and will soon solicit audiences and social networks for ideas.

American Folk Singer - Songwriter

Kate Callahan is Connecticut's 16th State Troubadour, and one of the most awarded singer-songwriters in her home state. She gives a concert of soulful, optimistic and uplifting original music plus songs by Leonard Cohen, and Bob Dylan. Callahan has shared stages with songwriter legends Judy Collins, Noel Paul Stookey (Peter, Paul & Mary), the late Bill Morrissey, Aztec Two Step, and Regina Spektor. She is unapologetically optimistic in concert, singing original songs about the Earth, gratitude, marriage, love, and spirit.

Connecticut's 16th State Troubadour

The honorary position of Connecticut State Troubadour was established in 1991 by the State of Connecticut. The State Troubadour serves as an ambassador of music and song and promotes cultural literacy among Connecticut citizens. The Connecticut Office of the Arts (COA) appoints an individual resident singer-songwriter as State Troubadour based on the recommendation of a review panel.

Kate served as Connecticut's ambassador of song until June 2018. Her goals included bringing a therapeutic music program to female inmates in the state. She has also started a grassroots record label made up of friends, family, and fans. Kate continues to tour in and outside of Connecticut, celebrating CT's culture and tourism through her original music.

// ABOUT THE MUSIC IN THE GARDEN SERIES //

Stanley-Whitman House's Music in the Garden Series presents artists and shows differently than a club show- instead our house concert is more up close and personal. All of the artifice is stripped away. No stage, no dressing rooms, no barrier between the performer and the audience. The SWH Music in the Garden series is more like being one-step-closer to the way music was intended- an artist traveling from town to town, telling stories and making friends. Come check this out!

// ABOUT THE MUSEUM //
