This Music-in-Medicine concert--integrating real-time neurophysiological data collection and brain-mapping--brings together Houston Symphony Concertmaster Yoonshin Song, violinist Alexandros Sakarellos, violist Joan DerHovsepian, cellist Charles Seo, and Music-in-Medicine Director Dr. Mei Rui.
Antonín Dvořák’s Piano Quintet No. 2 in A major, Op. 81 and Gustav Mahler’s youthful Piano Quartet in A minor together trace a musical journey from hope to revival. Composed during a period of artistic flourishing, Dvořák’s quintet radiates warmth, lyricism, and the vibrant spirit of Czech folk traditions—most vividly in the reflective Dumka and the spirited dance rhythms of the scherzo and finale—offering music that moves gracefully between tenderness and joy. Mahler’s Piano Quartet, written when he was only sixteen, reveals a young composer already capable of profound emotional depth. Its passionate themes and searching harmonies hint at the expansive voice Mahler would later develop in his symphonies. Together, these works illuminate music’s remarkable capacity to transform longing into vitality, reflecting a shared arc of resilience, hope, and revival--where music becomes both a source of comfort and strength, and a celebration of the enduring human spirit.
