CHIARA MARGARITA COZZOLANI: SALMI A OTTO VOCI
Early Music Alberta joins forces with Montreal’s Ensemble Caprice for the opening concert of our Early Music festival, devoted to the extraordinary music of Chiara Margarita Cozzolani.
Eight women’s voices fill the space in Cozzolani’s Salmi a otto voci concertati, published in Venice in 1650. A Benedictine nun and one of the most remarkable composers of seventeenth-century Milan, Cozzolani writes for two groups of four voices, moving between intimate exchanges and the full sound of all eight singers.
Ensemble Caprice’s Matthias Maute conducts the vocal ensemble, joined by cornetto, sackbut, strings, theorbo, harpsichord and organ. Cozzolani’s psalms and Magnificat are interspersed with instrumental music by Giovanni Paolo Cima, Dario Castello and Philipp Friedrich Böddecker, and short movements from Maute’s Chaconne I.
