The next in Melbourne Civic Theatre's series of new play readings will be MUSIC FROM A SPARKLING PLANET by Douglas Carter Beane, on Saturday, October 18 at 2 p.m.The cast for this comedy is Dani Combs, Justin Rupp, Hunt Fitch, and Ryan Kastovich, with one male role remaining to be filled.
Playwright Douglas Carter Beane has been nominated for Best Book of a Musical Tony Award for RODGERS + HAMMERSTEIN'S CINDERELLA, LYSISTRATA JONES, SISTER ACT, and XANADU, as well as a Best Play nomination for THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED. He also wrote the screenplay of TO WONG FOO, THANKS FOR EVERYTHING.
MUSIC FROM A SPARKLING PLANET was first produced by the Drama Dept in New York City in 2001. It starred J. Smith-Cameron, now perhaps best known for her role as Gerri Kellman in the HBO series SUCCESSION, which earned her two Primetime Emmy Award nominations
THE STORY: Whatever became of Tamara Tomorrow? In the early seventies, this local television host, in her antennae and space suit, made cheery predictions of how exciting the future was going to be. Her sudden disappearance from the public eye was one of the great mysteries of the Philadelphia area. Three fans of Tamara, all grown up and disenchanted with the “future” as she predicted, decide to go in search of this “Delaware Valley Greta Garbo.” What they find along the way teaches them more about themselves than they really thought they could know.
