Music for Spring & Eastertide (Organ Recital)

Concert organist Dr. Jaebon Hwang, FAGO will play a varied program for Spring and Eastertide, including works by J.S. Bach and Louis Vierne, along with some lesser-known composers from the US, England, and France, including Nadia Boulanger and Jeanne Demessieux. This concert is offered free of charge as a gift to the community, and validated parking is available in the church’s underground garage on the corner of 12th and Morrison.

Jaebon Hwang is a Portland-based composer, concert organist, and collaborative keyboardist with a diverse and extensive musical background. She teaches organ at Lewis & Clark College and has previously taught composition and music theory at San Diego State University. Dr. Hwang has also held positions as Director of Music Ministries and Organist at First United Methodist Church of San Diego, Organist at Westwood United Methodist Church in Los Angeles, and Assistant Organist at First Congregational Church of Los Angeles.

In 2011, she earned the Fellow of American Guild of Organists (FAGO), the organization’s highest certification. She completed her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Southern California in 2019, studying organ with Dr. Ladd Thomas and composition with Dr. Morten Lauridsen. Prior to her organ studies, Dr. Hwang received degrees in Composition from Korea National University of Arts and in Scoring for Film & Multimedia from New York University.

As an active member of the American Guild of Organists (AGO), Dr. Hwang has served on the executive boards of the Los Angeles and San Diego chapters in several roles and directed the 2018 Pipe Organ Encounter. She has adjudicated several organ performance and composition competitions, including the AGO’s Pogorzelski-Yankee competition and regional competition for young organists.

Dr. Hwang has collaborated with world-class organizations such as the Los Angeles Opera and the San Diego Symphony. She also participated in the 2014 recording of Hollywood Epic Brass with top LA studio musicians and in the 2022 recording of Mysterium with violinist Anne Akiko Meyers and the Los Angeles Master Chorale.

Featured at the AGO West Region Conventions in 2017 and 2019, and at the AGO OrganFest 2021, Dr. Hwang maintains an active performance schedule as both a recitalist and collaborative artist. As time permits, she also composes new music and accepts commissions, with works published by Lorenz and Selah publishing companies.
