Join us for an unforgettable night of solo piano and chamber music performed by Han Chen (piano), Jonathan Lo (cello) and Christopher Lee (clarinet). The performance will include works by composers Jared Miller and Alice Ping Yee Ho

This concert is taking place on the ancestral and living lands of the Coast Salish Peoples.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Han Chen is “impressively commanding and authoritative” (Gramophone) and has “a graceful touch”, “rhythmic precision” and “hypnotic charm” (New York Times). After winning the Gold Medal at the 2013 China International Piano Competition, Chen has released three solo albums under the Naxos Records (music by Liszt, Rubinstein, and Thomas Adès, respectively). In 2021, Chen launched Migration Music, a series of interviews and performances featuring immigrant composers. Participating composers include Reinaldo Moya, Jihyun Kim, Lei Liang, Vivian Fung, and Huang Ruo. Born in Taiwan, Chen now resides in New York. After graduating from The Juilliard School (with Prof. Yoheved Kaplinsky) and the New England Conservatory (with Prof. Wha Kyung Byun), he is now a doctoral candidate at The Graduate Center, CUNY under the guidance of Prof. Yoheved Kaplinsky and Prof. Ursula Oppens.

Christopher Lee completed his Master’s degree at Juilliard School where he received Bachelor’s degree on Irene Diamond Graduate Fellowship and Eve Lyndlemarch Scholarship. He has studied with renowned clarinetist Charles Neidich and Ayako Oshima at The Juilliard School. Christopher has won the first and grand prizes at many competitions such as Korean Clarinet Competition, Vancouver Burnaby Clef Society Competition, “VAM” Competition, Korean Young Artist Competition and more. He was invited to perform and received the certificate at the 5th Carl Nielsen International Clarinet Competition in Odense, Denmark that only opens every 4 years. Christopher had been appointed as a principal clarinet of National Youth Symphony Orchestra of Canada, Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra and “VAM” Symphony Orchestra while giving out concerts tour in 12 different cities in North America. Christopher is currently principal clarinet of Vancouver Island Symphony Orchestra and occasionally performs with Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Victoria Symphony Orchestra.

Alice Ping Yee Ho is one of the most acclaimed composers writing in Canada today. Born in Hong Kong, Alice Ping Yee Ho has written in many musical genres and received numerous national and international awards, including the 2022 Nova Scotia Symphony’s Maria Anna Mozart Award, 2019 Johanna Metcalf Performing Arts Prize, 2016 Louis Applebaum Composers Award, 2014 Prince Edward Island Symphony Composers Competition, 2014 Kitchener Waterloo Symphony Friendship Orchestral Composition Competition, 2013 Dora Mavor Moore Award “Outstanding Original Opera” for her opera The Lesson of Da Ji, 2013 Boston Metro Opera International Composition Competition, K.M. Hunter Artist Award, du Maurier Arts Ltd. Canadian Composers Competition, MACRO International Composition Competition, Luxembourg Sinfonietta International Composition Prize, and International League of Women Composers Competition.

Jared Miller is a JUNO-Nominated composer who has worked in collaboration with many ensembles both in North America and internationally including the American Composers Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, The Nashville Symphony, the Victoria Symphony, the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, the symphony orchestras of Vancouver, Toronto, Winnipeg, and Edmonton, the Juilliard Orchestra, Cleveland’s Contemporary Youth Orchestra, the Sneak Peek Orchestra, The Attacca Quartet, Latitude 49 Ensemble, the New York City Ballet’s Choreographic Institute, the Emily Carr String Quartet, Sonora Collective, Standing Wave Ensemble and a long list of soloists that include pianists Sara Davis Buechner, Jani Parsons, Robert Fleitz and Imri Talgam, and violinist Francisco Fullana. His music has been featured and recognized in the New York Philharmonic’s Biennial (2014), the ISCM World Music Days (2017 & 2019), Vancouver’s Queer Arts Festival (2010, 2015 & 2019) and the Vancouver and Victoria Symphony’s New Music Festivals (2015-2019.)
