Music at St. Paul's: MAYA OSUGA, SOPRANO AND AIMEE FINCHER, PIANO
About this Event
Beyond the Skies is a celebration of the poetic and musical voices of women. The music, which spans several centuries, features songs from Her Art in Song’s debut album Wide Grey Skies: Edna St. Vincent Millay’s poetry through song, alongside Poulenc’s iconic Fiançailles pour rire and settings by female composers of the great German poets. Edna St. Vincent Millay’s early musical settings and Poulenc’s whimsical musical depictions of Louise de Vilmorin’s war time poetry provide a glimpse into the beautiful and heartbreaking world of art song in the early to mid 20th century. In line with Her Art In Song’s mission to bring new life to underrepresented voices, we explore well-known German Romantic poetry through three female voices: Fanny Hensel, Clara Schumann, and Mary Howe. The program closes with a portrait of Millay as a young poet through 21st-century settings by Joshua Burel and Jodi Goble.
