About this Event

TICKETED EVENT

Rizzoli Music Aperitivo is delighted to renew its partnership with the NoMad Jazz Festival and welcome back the Michael Leonhart Orchestra to Rizzoli Bookstore following its sold-out appearances in 2025 and 2026.

Opening this year’s festival week, the orchestra will perform selections from Michael Leonhart’s acclaimed Miles Davis Suite along with music by John Coltrane, honoring the centennials of two of the most influential artists in jazz history. Drawing on the breadth of Davis’s and Coltrane’s groundbreaking careers, the program features fresh orchestrations of iconic works as well as lesser-known treasures, alongside original compositions by Leonhart.

Grammy-winning trumpeter, composer, arranger, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter Michael Leonhart is one of the most versatile voices in contemporary music. A longtime member of Steely Dan since 1996, he has performed, arranged, conducted, and recorded with the band, including on the four-time Grammy Award-winning Two Against Nature. He is also a frequent collaborator of Elvis Costello, serving as arranger, orchestrator, conductor, and musical partner on numerous projects, including Costello's recent collaboration with the storied WDR Big Band. Leonhart's expansive career has included work with artists such as Mark Ronson, Bruno Mars, James Brown, Yoko Ono, David Byrne, and Meryl Streep. Leonhart appears on the Grammy Award-winning hit “Uptown Funk” and has composed music for film, television, and the stage. Alongside his work as a sought-after collaborator, he continues to develop ambitious large-ensemble projects with the Michael Leonhart Orchestra, earning acclaim for music that bridges jazz tradition and contemporary composition.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a TICKETED EVENT. Doors open at 4:30 pm. Show starts at 5:00 pm. Seating is limited and will be first come, first served.

The NoMad Jazz Festival

The NoMad Jazz Festival is a vibrant community celebration bringing world-class jazz and multigenerational talent to New York's historic NoMad and Flatiron districts. Centered in Madison Square Park, the festival bridges legendary performers with rising stars to honor the neighborhood's rich musical legacy “(…) Jazztopad stands as an internationally renowned festival with a clearly defined ethos, one that combines a strong respect for the traditions and roots of the music with a progressive vision that provides a platform for the contemporary and innovative.”

Rizzoli Music Aperitivo - The Concept

From Francis Scott Fitzgerald to Jack Kerouac, from Toni Morrison to James Baldwin, from Philip Michael Ondaatje to Geoff Dyer, from Julio Cortazar to Boris Vian, from Amiri Baraka and Ishmael Reed to Jayne Cortez, the list of international writers and poets inspired or intrigued by jazz and other musical genres goes on. Since New York City’s Rizzoli Bookstore has a long tradition of building bridges between arts genres, international scenes and creative people, we wanted to turn our gorgeous space in NoMad into an experimental living room where live jazz and other music can be enjoyed. The “Rizzoli Music Aperitivo” is sponsored by Field Blend Selections and is curated by Mondo Jazz, the weekly Radio Free Brooklyn show dedicated to international jazz (https://radiofreebrooklyn.com/show/mondo-jazz).

Established in New York in 1964, Rizzoli Bookstore moved in 1985 to its historic 57th Street location, where it resided for 29 years before relocating in 2015 to its current NoMad location on Broadway. It has been widely considered one of the foremost independent booksellers in America specializing in illustrated books on architecture, interior design, fashion, photography, cookery, and the fine and applied arts, as well as literature, foreign language books and international magazines. Rizzoli Bookstore has been, and will continue to be, a literary landmark in New York City, and a celebrated destination for important authors and book lovers from all over the world.

Mondo Jazz is a weekly program on Radio Free Brooklyn dedicated to the proposition that jazz is an international language. It is hosted every Wednesday night from 10 PM to midnight and Thursday morning from 8 to 10 AM, by Ludovico Granvassu, the founder and editor in chief of All About Jazz Italia. Field Blend Selections

Founded in January, 2017, Field Blend Selections is a new wine importing and distribution company based in New York City, serving the New York and New Jersey markets.

In both name and practice, Field Blend Selections celebrates agricultural traditions and diversity. The name is an homage to the nineteenth-century immigrants who co-planted an assortment of grape varieties in vineyards throughout the United States, many of which survive today. Alongside their vines, they often co-planted other crops, including fruits, grains, and legumes. This approach of co-mingling various plantings to achieve balance in the vineyards is now referred to as polyculture, and it is widely recognized as one of the best methods for naturally enriching soils and reducing disease. Polyculture, by replicating nature’s diverse ecosystems, produces healthier fruit without the necessity of artificial herbicides or pesticides
